Liberal Studies provides students with a unique opportunity to explore interdisciplinary ideas and themes in the humanities and arts, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. Liberal Studies courses emphasize creative and critical thinking, integrating knowledge from different disciplines, and understanding ideas in their historical and cultural context. The department offers a Major in Liberal Studies, a Minor in Liberal Studies, a minor in Food Studies, as well as a number of General Education courses.

Students majoring in Liberal Studies choose one of two possible study plans. The Elementary Education Plan is primarily for students planning to enter teaching credential programs and careers as elementary school or middle school teachers. The Interdisciplinary Thematic Plan allows students to select their upper division elective courses so as to explore an interdisciplinary theme of their choice.
