Liberal Studies provides students with a unique opportunity to explore interdisciplinary ideas and themes in the humanities and arts, the natural sciences, and the social sciences. Liberal Studies courses emphasize creative and critical thinking, integrating knowledge from different disciplines, and understanding ideas in their historical and cultural context. The department offers a Major in Liberal Studies, a Minor in Liberal Studies, a Minor in Food Studies, a Minor in Science, Culture, and Society, as well as a number of General Education courses.

All students students majoring in Liberal Studies take a well-constructed set of core courses. In addition, they choose one of two emphases: the Elementary Education Emphasis or the Interdisciplinary Thematic Emphasis .
